Many people have that one routine that they just love. They come in, work hard, feel good and go home feeling like they have accomplished a lot. The only problem is if it’s the same routine you’ve done a hundred times, your body knows exactly what to expect, has adapted to the movements, and performs them so much more efficiently that the increase in fitness isn’t as much as the hard work you just put in deserves.
Switching up your workout regimen every few weeks will keep your body guessing and force it to keep adapting (increasing fitness). Variety doesn’t always have to mean new exercises. Switch up your repetition range and number of sets, change the amount of rest in between, and try to incorporate some different equipment into your existing exercises—perform bench press on a stability ball or use the TRX straps for your pushups. Anything that can add a little element of “new” into your routine will keep your body guessing and help you get the best return on investment for your hard work.
